Blending reporting and opinion

Truth be told, I am not a huge Frank DeFord fan.

That’s partly because I am not a big sports fan. But it’s also because his turns of phrase often make my stomach churn.

Still, today’s commentary on NPR about concussions and football hit the issues squarely on the mark. He did not devolve into Frankisms or yearn for sports days gone by. Instead, he zeroed in on an issue that is too frequently swept under the rug. It is a case study in well-executed opinion.

If only such fact-based discussion were happening in the health-care debate.
